Subject: Animals Asia hosts dog-management symposium for Chinese officials
Together, we're making a better world for dogs
Thanks to your continued support, Animals Asia has been able to take a
significant step in our campaign to help dogs across China.
We hosted the first Scientific and Humane Dog Management Symposium in
Guangzhou and Hong Kong from 3-4 December 2009, bringing together
dog-management officials and animal-protection organisations from eight
Chinese cities to discuss best practice and develop guidelines to benefit
people and dogs alike.
As you are only too aware, Animals Asia is working to end
government-organised dog-killings on the streets of Chinese cities such as
the appalling bludgeoning to death of over 30,000 dogs in Hanzhong City in
June 2009. Many of these killings are in response to outbreaks of human
rabies or to archaic dog-management regulations that do not allow dogs of a
certain size into public areas.
Animals Asia understands the need for the Chinese authorities to protect
citizens by trying to prevent dog bites and further rabies deaths. However,
the inhumane and irrational methods being practiced are not acceptable.
Animals Asia presented a humane dog-population management strategy to the
delegates and encouraged government officials to consider widespread
vaccination and de-sexing programmes, as well as encouraging greater owner
responsibility.
Delegates agreed to form a taskforce on rabies and dog-population management
and to use this alliance to advise relevant provincial governments and the
Central Government on effective and humane dog-management strategies across
the country.
